Why no digital seconds display?

I was disappointed when I first got the Apple Watch and found that there was no way to display digital seconds on any of the faces. I had to go to an analog face to get a second hand, which is a bit silly really. Was hoping that 2.0 added options for digital seconds, but it seems to only add "cutesey" faces that I have no interest in. I'm also disappointed to hear that Apple will not allow 3rd party developers to create faces. I'm an Apple fan-boy thru and thru, but this seems to me to be indefensible.
